Over the course of the last few months, I've been working on and off on an RPG inspired skill system to complement and balance two fundamental changes that have happened to the DSA's role playing within those few months:
Increased technology limit
Increased technology limit
By a lot. As the desire for more sci-fiesque settings and plots grew, the technology cap was raised all the way to what is optimistically projected by scientists and other experts in their fields to exist in 2150. That's 30 years before the Mass Effect games are set in, for reference. And even then it's argued that those were being a bit conservative with their technology projections.
Low/Medium Fantasy elements
At the same time, there was some desire to introduce fantasy elements. The short of this is that the DSA now hosts a very entertaining and metaphysical sci-fi fantasy role playing setting. Now you may be asking why it says low/medium fantasy. The short answer for that is that we for sure don't host any high fantasy elements whatsoever. The more naunced answer is that in the world of literature, it's actually a matter of some debate where the distinction between low and medium fantasy is drawn or what medium fantasy can be categorized as. For our purposes, the definition of low fantasy we've been working with is informed by the camp that says low fantasy is anything that respects and is bound to the fundamental laws of our actual universe with room to bend them or find loopholes to exploit. High fantasy either breaks those laws entirely or sets itself in a universe with completely different fundamental laws of reality. So there won't be any Harry Potter wizards or Elder Scrolls magic or Star Wars Jedi and Sith Lords in our world. Although we use a custom planet set in a different universe, we adhere to the fundamental laws of our actual universe.
All of that sounds like magitech utopias with no problems in the world waiting to happen and everyone making themselves overpowered, doesn't it? Well yeah, that's a major risk and one that our previous manner of role playing, which was more appropriate to when the DSA didn't really make RP a focal point. Hence why that's changing now.
Introducing the Focus System
With all of the above changes, it now becomes necessary to introduce a fun new system for you to determine what your nation is good and bad at. So for the purpose of fun and balance, the DSA is now beta testing a brand new skill system. This system takes inspiration from the skill and trait system of Fallout: New Vegas and the Job system of Final Fantasy 14. Within, you will find a wide variety of skills that you can choose to be good at. These are a mix of real life technology branches, so nothing is left out, and magic skills in based around how the system of metaphysical magic works in our world. This is designed to ensure balance by making sure every nation has things that they're good at but also bad at so that there are no "master of all trades" techno magic utopias and that every player can use this as a valuable world building tool by providing a sort of map to spur ideas of what things in particular your nation Focuses in and why they do so, what sort of culture or other conditions led to your nation being adept at such and such field but not in another.
This system is now in beta testing. This means what you're looking at here is the beta version that we will all be testing for at least a whopping month. Why so long? This a major role play gameplay overhaul that's taken a while to get to this point already. That means that there needs to be a lot of play testing to gather enough data to ensure that the final version is to our liking. That means that during all of this, I need a lot of feedback from everyone so that this can be tweaked and tuned to ensure a final product that we're happy with. So far the reception from alpha testing on Discord has been quite positive so hopefully that trend continues because it would mean there's something we all enjoy and I would be very happy to know I made a contribution that has made the DSA much more fun everyone.
During this beta version, I will need to see people posting their chosen skills and Focuses on this thread. I will need to see people role playing with this their chosen specializations in mind either on this forum, on the Discord server, or on the RMB and in their Factbooks on NationStates. And most importantly, I'm going to need mountains of feedback and response so that I know what changes to make and why to ensure balance and fun. As such, I will really only be focusing on this thread for feedback, since it is one stop pool of all of the necessary information I need. You can leave me feedback on Discord or via telegram on NationStates, but this thread gets priority.
What to look forward to
The Focus System is Phase 1 of planned overhaul for the DSA's role play game community. This dictates what your nation is good at but not how advanced it is. Phase 2, which is planned for a later date after the final launch of the Focus System, is an optional leveling system. It will be optional because it relies on your NationStates Scientific Advancement stat to determine how advanced your nation is. And we understand that this can be iffy for some people, though it is not unheard of as our War Rules have always relied on taking NS stats into account. Hence, it is currently planned to be an optional thing to adopt for yourself. Phase 3 is going to be the final overhaul of the War Rules, which have been in beta for some time now (we don't really do much war in the DSA, so we've been lax on that) which will be designed to be streamlined and tactical. Phase 4 may be the revival of the DSA's Space RP, which has fallen into disuse. You may wonder why it's even needed now but it will remain the same as always: no tech caps. One idea is currently to set it in the far future of the DSA's world and it will have interstellar capabilities (in Main RP, everything is contained within our star system, the Ikani system).
Phase 1.5, which will happen during the beta test of the Focus System, will be the implmentation of some simple and common sense anti-godmodding and anti-fluffing rules and some tweaks to war and annexation rules.
Without further ado, here is the Focus System. I hope you enjoy. Please post your chosen skills and focuses in this thread. And do forgive the dullness of the document. For the final version, I intend to format and decorate it nicely.
