Hello guys, gals, and non-binary pals, sapients of all variations. Welcome to the Edge of The World event! This is a GMed event similar to a tabletop role-playing game. The intent of this event is to be fun and interesting for both experienced role-players and those not typically interested looking for a more curated experience.
The event works like this.
I (Student Loan Debt), the Game Master, will make a narrative post both on this thread and in the Special Event RP channel on the Discord server. All participants will make a post responding to that within 2 days describing the action their characters take in response. These posts can range from a sentence to whole paragraphs. After a 2 day period, the next narrative post will go up, responding to actions and explaining how the situation has changed.
If an involved party does not post for a phase of the event, either their character will do nothing of significance or I will have their characters act in accordance to their personality and Expertise in order to keep the event moving!
The event will end either after: The expedition returns back to the Capital; or catastrophic failure, preventing the return of the mission, occurs.
Character Creation Format
- You may create up to two characters to participate in this event. You may use either already established characters or new characters. They can be human, A.I., or your nation's sapient animal. If you chose your nation's sapient animal, however, make sure they can survive cold temperatures. For example, a lynx is suited for the cold while a giraffe would die from a snowflake landing on them (not literally but you get the point).
- Realize that it is possible that one or both of your characters could die. Death is not a goal nor will it be sought after, but exploration of a polar desert does run a high risk of injury and/or death.
- Again, we're exploring an uncharted continent of below-0 degree temperatures, intense winds, the most dangerous seas and currents on the planet, chances of sunburn and eye damage from snow albedo, every animal is a predator, sudden crevasses, and little to no possibility of a rescue party beyond those on board the ship. I just want you to make sure that you know that this isn't a stroll through a winter wonderland. There's a reason the image at the top of this page is so ominous.
- Each Character Expertise is an area your character has particular expertise in, chosen from your nation’s major, minor, and supplemental Specializations. DankAss Commune's specialization system, found on the forum with this link, will be utilized for these purposes. If you aren’t sure about your specializations, just whip up a quick draft of it and don’t be afraid to change it later. The event will be a great way of determining what specializations you like!
- Each character also has a supply of Luck Points. A Luck Point can be used by a character in order to succeed at an attempted action rather than rolling for it. If you create two characters, they each have 1 Luck Point. If you have only one character, they have up to 3 luck points.
Try to keep actions relatively realistic, and make sure to phrase them as attempts rather than completed actions.
Example: "Veronica attempts to pick up a penguin and tries to take it home with her", not "Veronica takes a penguin home"

OOC Q&A
How do I join?
Each interested party will register for the event ahead of time, utilizing the above format. Anyone interested will be accepted - the sign-up is just necessary for character creation. Simply fill out the character creation sheet and post it on this thread.
What is with the character creation sheet?
Interested nations can develop up to two characters to be involved in the mission, and each character may have two areas of Expertise chosen from your nation’s Specializations.
You may choose the same specializations on both characters, if you choose to create two, or the same specializations as other nations’ characters, but remember - A diverse team is the key to success. Though certain specializations may seem like an obvious choice, the event has been designed so that any specialization can be useful - Be creative and think outside the box! I will do all I can to make sure everyone’s Expertise have a chance to shine.
Also keep in mind that not all parties involved in the mission have to walk on the ice - Parties monitoring the situation and assisting from the ship can be just as helpful!
When does it start?
There will be a 5 day sign-up period, starting today, January 13th, after which the event will begin on January 18th.
During this sign-up period, the nature and rules of the event are subject to change based on public opinion and commentary. Please offer constructive feedback and criticism if you have any problems with the design so far!
So how does it actually work?
The event will come in phases. Each phase will last about 2 days and consists of a narrative post by me describing the current stage of the mission and the challenges you are currently facing. Each participant must respond to the post describing what their characters are doing - Literally one sentence will suffice here, but roleplaying will give you an additional bonus to your rolls, improving the mission’s chances of success.
Typically, actions consist of either performing research, responding to a current challenge, or preparing for a future challenge. A character take a sample of the water or ice, or fix a problem on the ship, or prepare some lovely sandwiches to nibble on as we trek across the crucible of ice and death that is the lower reaches of man's domain. Lots of options.
Actions should be significant - Simple tasks can be performed automatically as part of a larger action without concern. Picking up a piece of ice is not a significant action, but collecting ice cores from a particular location for research can be!
If you would like to specify which specialization a character is using to act, feel free to note that in parentheses. I will use my best judgement to determine it otherwise, and will be as generous as possible in that regard.
Cool, but how does it actually work, work?
Players do not need to worry about any of this, but if you’re curious and want to understand the game-play better: Actions with a chance of failure are resolved via dice-rolls. I will be rolling 2 six-sided dice for each roll, with results dependent upon the sum of these rolls in addition to any bonuses. (or penalties!)
Various threats or challenges may also be rolling, with bonuses or penalties depending on how well they’ve been handled (or left unchallenged!).
Your characters gain a +3 bonus to performing actions in their field of Expertise.
Role-playing their actions (more than just a quick sentence) will give an additional +1 bonus on top of your existing bonuses.
Example:
"Veronica attempts to lift a penguin and tries to take it home".
Not much there
"Veronica stopped talking and looked out. In her line of sight was the most adorable looking penguin she had ever seen. She pushed over a teammate as she ran up to it. She stretched her massive arms out as wide as she could and tries to clamp around the penguin, her pupils changing from circles to hearts in the process (it's a medical condition). She wants to take this chonky fella home with her".
This would be amazing.
