DSA Ocean Race 2020
The DSA Ocean Race provides the ultimate test of a team and an adventure like no other.
It is a race around the world. Teams between 7 and 10 people sail sailing yachts from ocean to ocean, racing against other yachts to arrive to their spot first over a 13,000 nautical mile course.
How Does It Work?
- The teams will start in the DSA Capital and sail to their first destination; Venovica. Then they will sail to their next destination, then the next, and so on until they arrive at the finish line in Kathina Dakani.
- Each leg of the race is treated as it's own race. Points are awarded in order of which teams reaches the destination first. For example; if there are 7 teams, the first ones to finish will get 7 points, second will get 6, and so on.
- Once at their destination, teams are given a break to relax, recover, and eat real food.
How Do I Join?
- Comment on this thread that you wish to join and give your team a name.
What Are The Times?
- Sign-ups will last from May 8th to May 15th. The race will begin on May 17th.
- Each leg of the race will (within a time bubble) last a day, with points awarded each day.
- The race will end on May 25th.
- If you do not sign up before 11:59 PM UTC on May 15th, you cannot enter.
What Are The Rules?
- Sailing yachts must stay on or near the designated course; no short cuts.
- Substitution of crew members is allowed between legs of the course (but not during)
- For movement, you will rely entirely on your sails. Motors and other forms of movement are only allowed for emergency situations.
- All crew members will be considered equal in ability. It does not matter if your crew are humans, A.I., nor sapient animals. They will all be treated the same.
- All teams will sail on a IMOCA 60 sailing yacht, picture below (feel free to decorate the sailing yacht with your own design)
Some Things I Should Know Before Hand?
- The Scorinator program being used is Xkoranate
- Xkoranate works by myself entering the names of each team and how skilled they are. It then spits out random numbers to determine your team's score.
- Teams will have a skill ranking in the scoranator between 0 (horrible at sailing) and 5 (best sailors in the world). Teams will automatically be placed at 3 (unless requested to be lower).
- The Scores are not determined by the host, but by Xkoranate; a machine. The only thing I do control is how each team received those scores (aka the RP about why they were ranked how they were).
Can I Raise My Skill Level and Make My Team Better?
What Kind of RP Should I Do?
- Yes you can.
- If you would like to raise your skill level, you should do some RP involving the competition. We love seeing people do RP and, if you do some, you should be rewarded. Your reward is a high skill level and so your team will have a better chance at winning.
- If you do a considerable amount of RP involving this competition (beyond just 1 post), then your team skill will be raised to a 4. If you do a lot of RP, then your team skill will be raised to 5, giving you the best chance of winning races.
What Kind of RP Should I Do?
- Any kind really. You can interview your sailing crew, you can talk about any sponsors your team has, you can design your sails using the picture above, you can talk about why the team applied for the race, any RP is great!
- This applies all throughout the race, as well. If you do RP while the race is happening, you can raise your skill level
Warnings
- You will want your crew members to be more than sailors. We recommend some of them be trained in medical response, sail-making, diesel engine repair, electronics, nutrition, mathematics, and hydraulics. You should be prepared for the long periods of time on the water.
- The seas are a rough and deadly place filled with mystery and mayhem. If any of your crew are harmed, injured, face any other form of damage, or die, the DSA Ocean Race Committee will not be held responsible.
- I repeat, some of your crew members could die (somebody in the race will, as is tradition of the DSA Boat Race), especially as we near the Connolly Strait on the 5th Leg of the competition. If you are entering specific RP characters that you do not want them to die and/or be badly injured, then you can tell me so and I will not lay a finger on them. However, your entire team is not immune, so you cannot make your entire team untouchable. This is a dangerous race.
