The Art of Diplomacy
The president of Kanoshu looked across at the sea of faces before her. The faces came from every corner of Delusia, diplomats and dignitaries of nations both near and far.
It was an imposing sight. Ayaka had note even stepped foot in these hallowed halls before today – now she stood behind a podium, tasked with arguing her nation’s case before all Delusia.
As her eyes passed over those assembled in the hall, the weight of the moment and the burden of her role threatened to rip away her composure. It was only when her eyes fell upon her own people’s delegation, the turquoise banner of her homeland displayed proudly behind them, were her spirits lifted.
Filled with sudden resolve and thunder she leant forward, her lips hesitated but a moment before the microphone, and she began to speak.
‘Nations and peoples of the world. I address you here today under grave circumstances. We have been reminded that peace is not a constant we can take for granted. Peace is fragile, it is something that must be maintained with great effort. Peace is not the natural state of life – the natural state of life is violence and desperate and bloody struggle for survival. Peace is a hard labour to be undertaken, a state that can only be achieved when sapient life overcomes its dark urges, when dialogue and restraint are able to reign in the dark pull of the abyss.
We have seen what happens when we let our resolve falter, when we let our primal instincts of greed and violence lead nations astray. A war has been thrust on a world that did not wish it, a war between my motherland and the Empire of the Torshavnese.’
Her gaze drifted to the Empire’s delegation for a moment, but her voice did not stray from its composed hardness.
‘This is not a war where two nations have fallen to arms over territorial dispute or ancient rivalry. No, this is a war that was thrust upon us in a brutal and blatant display of imperialist conquest. Some half-million of my comrades, my siblings, my people - are dead. Some 300,000 Torshavnese invaders lie dead upon our shores besides them. They died needlessly. They died for the greed and ambition of one man.
We are here today to seek peace. If any chance exists to end my nations occupation without further bloodshed, then I owe it to my people to pursue it with all my strength. But know this, we are not a weak people, if the invader can not be convinced to depart then we will not abandon our fight – if a million of us more must die to drive them out we will do so, we will die on our feet before we live on our knees, we will never surrender, we will never grant the enemy the peace they have denied us – we will fight them day and night, as long as it takes we will fight.’
Her voice rose to a fevered height before it faltered and began to crack, the mask of composed serenity breaking for just a moment, and the barely contained rage and hatred beneath briefly exposed. She could not stop the tears from forming in her eyes as she steadied herself on the podium.
‘Peoples of the world. If the grievances my people have endured are not addressed, if this act of unspeakable violence is not struck down and punished with all our might, then the fate of Kanoshu will be the fate of all your nations. It may not come at once; you may think yourselves safe having sacrificed small Kanoshu on the altar of peace – but it will be an illusion. The imperialist’s hunger is never truly sated, soon it will rise again - and if not the Torshavnese then it will be another.
This is not a threat but a warning. If Kanoshu is partitioned, if any part of it should be sundered and served to the imperialist then he will only grow bolder. A precedent will have been set, that enough violence will see a state attain its goals, and once released into the world that precedent will grow slowly poisoning our world – and then we will all truly see the fragility of peace and the horror of war.’
She looked back at her own delegation sat at the back of the hall and they silently nodded in acknowledgment.
‘We hereby demand the following terms…’
Kanoshuan Demands: |
